CULTURE NEWS

  • HEARTSongs '26: The Power of Love, a free poetry event celebrating the fifth anniversary of HEARTS Happenings, will be held at Cedar Grove at 8229 Gilead Road on Saturday, Feb. 14 from 2-5 p.m. Michael D. Connor will perform as George Moses Horton to honor the historical tie between local pioneers — tickets are required.  Lake Norman Publications

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Charlotte-Mecklenburg school board approved converting Feb. 11 and Apr. 29 from early release to full days of in-person instruction after winter storms caused eight days of cancellations — officials said the change will help students get continuous learning time.  WSOCTV.com

  • The Hornets traded for former Tar Heel Colby White and Mike Conley Jr. from the Chicago Bulls on Feb. 4 in exchange for Collin Sexton, Ousmane Dieng and three second-round picks—moves that came as the team built a seven-game win streak and held a 23 to 28 record.  WBTV
