- ➤ This week began on March 31 with a book talk at Chambers Lilly Family Gallery and continues today with an event by Olympic gymnast Laurie Hernandez at the Knobloch Campus Center. The calendar also lists a sold-out Neil Diamond tribute on April 3 and many shows, concerts and family events from April 4 to April 6 at venues in Huntersville, Cornelius and Davidson including STEAM Day at Latta Nature Preserve and a Rock the Boat fundraiser. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Seven students from Lakeside Charter Academy won the regional round of the Great History Challenge (held at Winthrop University) on March 25 and earned a spot in the National competition. They will compete in Orlando over Memorial Day weekend in May. Cornelius Today
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Starting June 7, twenty DMV offices including Huntersville will offer Saturday hours from 8 a.m. to noon until Aug. 23. Fifty driver’s license offices will open at 7 a.m. and close at 5 p.m. on weekdays—DMV commissioner Wayne Goodwin said the change is meant to meet rising demand. WSOCTV.com
- ➤ Charlotte-Mecklenburg Emergency Management reminded residents yesterday that the statewide burn ban remained in effect due to increased wildfire risk, so they were advised not to use fire pits or conduct any open burning. Anyone violating the ban faced a fine of 100 dollars and 183 dollars in court costs and may be charged for extinguishing fires. Cornelius Today
- ➤ Mecklenburg County will start dredging Park Road Park’s pond on April 16 (weather permitting) to remove sediment and debris and improve water quality and safety. Hydraulic pumps will transfer sediment to large bags in the adjacent parking lot, and work is expected to finish this summer (with fishing limited and some trails closed for safety).
