CULTURE NEWS

  • Tuck Fest returns at the U.S. National Whitewater Center for a three-day outdoor festival with kayaking, trail running, climbing, yoga, and live music. The event features pro and citizen athletes competing and draws tens of thousands from the region.  WCNC

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Local homeowners may spot small mounds of dirt that signal native ground-nesting bees are active in yards. Wildlife experts advise leaving the bees undisturbed (they pollinate plants) (and improve soil health) to protect this valuable ecosystem service.  WCNC
  • Mecklenburg County has begun voluntary water restrictions today as residents are asked to limit outdoor watering to no more than two days a week (to conserve water).  WCNC
  • Local fire and climate experts joined meteorologists Brad Panovich and Brittany Van Voorhees today to analyze how a severe drought is drying out the Carolinas and raising wildfire risks+climate challenges, offering useful insights for local residents.  WCNC
  • Meteorologist Bekah Birdsall explained that 95% of North Carolina is in an extreme drought and warned that if dry conditions persist, long-term impacts may reduce water supplies and affect agriculture in local communities (including Huntersville).  WCNC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • After a local family's dangerous experience with landslides during Helene, lawmakers are proposing faster mapping and an early warning system to alert communities about potential hazards. The move aims to boost preparedness in areas at risk.  WCNC
  • Rinehardt Road at Highway 150 in Mooresville reopened Monday after nearly five months of construction. NCDOT crews improved the busy intersection by adding an extension road for a new neighborhood of over 300 homes+ traffic near Lancaster's BBQ was eased.  WSOCTV.com
