- ➤ Mecklenburg County will host Scam Jam to help senior residents learn to spot scams—registration is required for the free event held on May 1 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Charlotte where experts from state and local agencies will speak. - ➤ The annual Richard Sheltra Memorial Run will take place on Saturday, May 3 with an opening ceremony at 7 a.m. at Belle Johnston Community Center in Pineville to honor fallen firefighter Richard Sheltra and raise funds for new turnout gear and scholarships for first responders — the event includes a 10k, 5k, and 1 Mile Fun Run. - ➤ On April 21, the Lake Norman Chamber honored three local educators at the 2025 Education PowerLuncheon held at Northstone Country Club in Huntersville, an event presented by Atrium Health and sponsored by HomeTrust Bank, Business Today/Cornelius Today and WSIC. Brian Sisson presented awards to educators from a CMS school, a charter school and a private school — with former Mayor Melinda Bales and Brandi Jones assisting in the presentations. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Water quality testing is underway after a sewage leak on April 19 released an estimated 6,250 gallons of wastewater, with about 6,240 gallons entering Mallard Creek — part of the Yadkin Pee Dee Basin. WCNC
