- ➤ Judge Rex Marvel created an emergency program in Mecklenburg County to support children in intense custody battles after the Council for Children’s Rights closed. - ➤ A Place for Mom released a report on long-term care costs in North Carolina showing 2025 median rates of $5,730 per month for assisted living, $7,113 for memory care, and $3,300 for independent living (with home care starting at $30 per hour in early 2026). WSOCTV.com
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ School districts in the Charlotte region have canceled classes for Friday, May 1 as many teachers join the 'Kids Over Corporations' rally at Halifax Mall to call for increased public education investment and contest corporate tax breaks; Charlotte-Mecklenburg, Gaston, Cabarrus, Kannapolis and Asheville districts are among those affected. - ➤ Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools leaders rejected a $2.1 billion budget proposal today and expect Superintendent Dr. Crystal Hill to submit a revised plan by May 12 (revision details pending). WCNC

- ➤ On Apr. 24, Grand Oak Elementary School celebrated its historic Grand Oak becoming Huntersville’s first Treasure Tree when the Environmental Sustainability Committee held a ceremony that highlighted the tree’s age and size (107-foot branch spread and 16-foot circumference). - ➤ Meteorologist Joe Puma said recent rain measuring 0.08 inches on Saturday and 0.18 inches on Tuesday left the region 8 inches below normal & that a sustained heavy rainfall event delivering several inches over a week is needed to ease the drought. WSOCTV.com
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Local firefighter and football coach will run a free week-long camp for kids entering 2nd through 5th grade this summer in Cornelius. The camp will teach football skills and teamwork in a hands-on environment. WCNC
- ➤ The Panthers will keep quarterback Bryce Young until 2027 after picking up his fifth-year option valued at about $29.5 million for the season & he is set to lead the team next season. WCNC
