  • The Mt. Zion Fish Fry Fundraiser Friday event will be held tomorrow at the Family Life Center from 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., offering dine-in and take-out options for local neighbors. Proceeds will benefit the Forward in Faith Campaign and the North Carolina Mountains Flood Relief Fund (supporting flood relief efforts).  Cornelius Today

EDUCATION NEWS

  • North Carolina lawmakers advanced House Bill 121 — which would remove the 2004 rule requiring schools to start by the Monday near Aug. 26 and to end by the Friday near June 11 — allowing school boards to set their own school-year calendars.  WCNC
  • A new national report showed North Carolina teachers ranked 43rd in pay with average salaries just below the minimum living wage—starting pay is $42,542. Lawmakers and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools board are working to address the issue, and if House Bill 192 passes, educators may receive raises up to $12,280.  WCNC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mecklenburg County's WIC program helps eligible women, infants and children receive supplemental nutritious foods, nutrition education, breastfeeding support and referrals to health care and community resources. The service is offered at three county locations—Northwest Health Department at 2845 Beatties Ford Road, Valerie C. Woodard Community Resource Center at 3205 Freedom Drive, and Ella B.
