ENVIRONMENT NEWS

➤ Mandatory water restrictions took effect May 1 in areas including Iredell and Catawba counties & Gastonia, Charlotte, and Hickory after Stage 2 drought conditions were declared in the Catawba River Basin. Violations carry fines from $100 to $600 as more communities may soon join the restrictions. WBTV

➤ A burn ban in Mecklenburg County parks takes effect Monday — banning grills and open flames as officials try to lower fire risks amid drought. WCNC
➤ Former NASCAR driver Greg Biffle was given the Order of the Long Leaf Pine for his brave work using his helicopter to bring supplies during Hurricane Helene; his niece accepted the honor from Gov. Josh Stein. Biffle made trips to remote mountain communities cut off by the storm. WCNC

➤ Anglers have competed at the Turtlebox Bassmaster Open at Lake Norman since April 30, with finals wrapping up today.
