EDUCATION NEWS

  • District leaders are pitching a plan to Mecklenburg County Commissioners that asks for millions to fund teacher pay, improve school safety and boost academic support in local schools.  WCNC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On May 7, the NC Senate's State and Local Government Committee approved updated legislation to reconstitute the Lake Norman Marine Commission, with former Sen. Jeff Tarte saying it brings clarity to outdated law and will move quickly through the General Assembly. Lincoln County Commissioners voted Monday night to withdraw from the commission, which will dissolve on June 30 if one county leaves, but officials expect a new panel to form soon.  Cornelius Today
  • Town leaders in Huntersville opposed House Bill 765 in Tuesday’s meeting, saying the bill would force local planners to use NCDOT standards and remove local control over zoning. They warned the bill, which aims to lower housing costs, could spur gentrification and harm pedestrian-friendly streets— concerns shared by other Charlotte-area municipalities.  Queen City News

  • Prominent homebuilder NVR Inc filed a rezoning request for a 106-acre site on Everette Keith Road in Huntersville to build a new project (259 home lots). The public hearing is set for today before the Board of Commissioners and the project plans include a mix of housing types.  WSOCTV.com
