- ➤ A local nonprofit in Mecklenburg County will launch Book Start later this year, offering five new books (and reading guidance) to help babies facing financial hardship develop early language skills. Executive director Kelly Cates said the program is designed to make daily reading easier for new parents. WSOCTV.com
- ➤ Three juniors from Hough High School placed second statewide in the Ready, Set, App competition with their SensoryScope app that helps users assess noise and crowd levels in public spaces. The team plans to refine the app and join more competitions in the future. Cornelius Today
- ➤ The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education approved Superintendent Dr. Hill’s revised $2.1 billion budget proposal on Tuesday, May 12, which boosts teacher pay with an average 8% raise and bonus plans while reallocating funds to support high-need schools. WBTV

- ➤ Starting Memorial Day weekend, Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation will open outdoor pools, spraygrounds and free swim lessons at Cordelia Pool and Double Oaks Family Aquatic Center, while Ramsey Creek Beach in Cornelius remains closed due to drought-related low water levels (registration for lessons begins June 20 at 9 a.m.).
