CULTURE NEWS

  • On May 20, the 250th anniversary of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence will be marked at Alexandriana Park, where local founders conceived the document seen as a precursor to the nation’s Declaration of Independence—HEARTS will host historians Scott Syfert and David Fleming on May 24 at Pioneer Springs Community School from 2 to 4 p.m. to share related stories.  Lake Norman Publications

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Town officials proposed dipping into the town’s savings to use $15.6 million in the fiscal year 2026 budget for transportation, parks projects, and studies to improve traffic at the Gilead Road and N.C. 115 intersection—plans that include critical staffing increases for emergency services. The funds will support studies such as one for a greenway tunnel underneath Huntersville-Concord Road at the Vermillion neighborhood.  Lake Norman Publications
  • Former Town Commissioner Dan Boone announced his candidacy for mayor on May 14 after eight years of service and a previous mayoral run in 2023. He said he will focus on responsible growth—public safety, better infrastructure, and preserving Huntersville’s character.  Cornelius Today
  • Local municipalities in Huntersville, Iredell, Mooresville, and Cornelius passed resolutions rejecting House Bill 765—a proposal that would shift planning and zoning authority from local boards to the state—and argue that if enacted on Jan. 1, it could lead to unregulated development and harm home values.   • The N.C. Department of Transportation will close the McCoy Road Bridge over Torrence Creek on May 19 for timber deck improvements. The closure is expected to last three weeks (weather permitting) and drivers must follow a detour (McIlwaine Road, Beatties Ford Road, Bud Henderson Road, Gilead Road).  City of Huntersville
