BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Lake Norman Chamber of Commerce has opened applications for the Leadership Lake Norman program for the 2025-26 session. The nine-month course costs $495 for chamber members and $600 for non-members — applicants must submit their forms by Sept. 5 and will be notified by Sept. 9 — and anyone interested can call 704-892-1922 for details.  Business Today NC

CRIME NEWS

  • Jefry Edgardo Gonzalez Artica, 22, was arrested on Wednesday, June 25, in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana for fatally shooting 23-year-old Javier Lee Martinez Hernandez on April 13 on Eastway Drive in east Charlotte + he will be extradited to face first-degree murder charges.  WBTV
  • A judge ruled that a CMPD officer who shot into a car at the airport did not get immunity for using deadly force—further legal review will continue as the case moves forward.  WSOCTV.com

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Chimney Rock State Park reopened Friday — nine months after Hurricane Helene forced a months-long closure — with officials confirming the park is ready for visitors.  WCNC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The North Carolina State Board of Education approved a six-month extension for two PowerSchool systems used to hire and evaluate teachers following a major data breach in January—new rules require PowerSchool to meet strict security measures including National Guard reviews and submitting all security documents by September 1 before payment resumes. The board stated that the teacher systems, separate from the main student data system which is being dropped on June 30, may have their contract extended for up to three additional periods if the issues are fixed.  WCNC
  • A new nine-member Lake Norman Marine Commission will take effect July 1 to manage public recreation, water quality and safety on the lake. Commissioners from Lincoln, Catawba, Mecklenburg and Iredell counties will work with local stakeholders—Duke Energy, Charlotte Water and first responders—to develop necessary policies and programs.  Cornelius Today
  • House Bill 948 passed both chambers on June 27 and now goes to the governor for his signature. If voters approve the one-cent tax, it will fund transit, roads, and sidewalks — key steps to improve transportation in our county.  Cornelius Today
