Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 29th of July.
Good morning, Huntersville.
🏘️ Community
Morris-Jenkins has launched its second season of the free Ice Cream Truck Program that delivers a variety of frozen treats — from classic ice cream bars to non-dairy options — to local events such as hospitals, Girl Scout gatherings and block parties.
The program also provides fun items for kids and invites community groups to request a visit to brighten their celebrations.
This week, local events begin with fitness classes at Be Well Birkdale today in Huntersville and continue with a farmers market in Cornelius on Wednesday, preschool playdates at Birkdale Village, trivia night at Torrence and Knox on Wednesday, live music on Thursday and Friday, and a ghost hunt at Hugh Torance House on Saturday. The events (held at venues like The Plaza, Cornelius Town Hall, BoatYard Lake Norman, and Hugh Torance House) offer options for exercise, fresh food, and family fun.
🚧 Accidents
At 11 a.m. on July 26th, a multi-vehicle crash on I-485 between Wilkinson and West Boulevard in Charlotte killed six people—including a baby and a toddler—when a Honda CR-V hit a Chrysler van that veered into a parked tractor-trailer.
Officials released additional details about Saturday’s deadly crash on I-485 that killed six people and left one survivor — the investigation is ongoing.
🎭 Culture
On August 14th from 1 to 7 p.m., the Huntersville Blood Donation Center will host the Carolina Renaissance Festival Blood Drive—the first 100 donors will earn a free festival ticket while other donors get a buy one, get one discounted ticket and a $15 e-Gift Card along with a preview performance of festival acts. Donors must be 18 or 17 with parental consent, bring valid ID and book an appointment to help boost the summer blood supply.
🏛️ Government
On July 24, over 30 local food lovers ate dinner with inmates at Mecklenburg County Detention Center to break stigma and support change.
Officials said they will hold more events—like dinners—to give inmates respect and help them prepare for reentering the community.
Former governor Roy Cooper announced his run for the U.S. Senate on July 28 in a video posted on X, saying his campaign will focus on small businesses, the middle class and healthcare.
His declaration comes as the competitive 2026 race in North Carolina takes shape after incumbent GOP Senator Thom Tillis from Huntersville did not seek re-election.
