  • Duke Energy said today that its Special Assistance Program helps customers pay high energy bills by offering direct payment help, flexible installment plans, and online tools—support that aims to keep homes powered during tough times. The company also noted the Duke Energy Foundation donated $100,000 to boost the Share the Light Fund for those in need.  WCNC
  • Today, National Night Out runs from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Smithville Park (19710 S. Ferry St.) as local officials promote community safety with family activities.   • Mecklenburg County Air Quality officials and transit partners invite residents to join the Fresh Air Rides challenge running Aug. 4-31 to reduce air pollution by using alternatives to single-occupancy vehicles.   • Police departments across the country are reexamining the Sig Sauer P320 after a fatal discharge in Wyoming killed Airman Brayden Lovan on July 20—while the North Carolina State Highway Patrol said its troopers have not experienced any spontaneous discharges in roughly eight years of use, and Senator Mujtaba Mohammed from Mecklenburg County has raised concerns over the weapon's safety. Some agencies and training centers have paused or banned use of the gun as investigations continue.  WCNC
