EDUCATION NEWS

  • During the Town Board meeting on August 19, the town honored 16 Huntersville 101 graduates who spent the summer learning about town departments — including tours of fire, police and historic sites — to better understand community services.  City of Huntersville
  • Mecklenburg County started an education campaign yesterday morning to teach residents how to safely dispose of lithium-ion batteries after multiple fires at waste facilities. A kick-off event at 10:30 a.m. at Compost Central on Valleydale Road—officials explained where to drop off batteries safely.  WSOCTV.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mecklenburg County will co-host an opioid conference at the Charlotte Convention Center on Sept. 15 from 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. County leaders will share updated opioid settlement spending data and plan for improved treatment and recovery support with health and justice partners.  City of Huntersville
  • Brian Vaughan, who has served with the Huntersville Police since 2001, will officially become the department's new Chief of Police on Monday, September 1 (he plans to continue community policing and introduce new initiatives to keep the town safe).  City of Huntersville

HEALTH NEWS

  • Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center was named the best hospital in the Charlotte area for the ninth consecutive year by U.S. News and World Report on August 28th. It was ranked No. 12 on the Best Hospitals for Rehabilitation list — making it the only Charlotte hospital to earn that honor and the top rehabilitation center in the Southeast.  Business Today NC
