  • Today, Huntersville’s Birkdale Village hosts the Be Well Birkdale fitness class from 6-7 p.m. and Davidson holds a Ukraine fundraiser at Flatiron Kitchen — Taphouse from 5-9 p.m.; later this week, local events include a North Meck Farmers Market behind Cornelius Town Hall on Sept. 10, a 9/11 ceremony at Cornelius Fire Station 1 on Sept. 11, and music and cultural festivals set for Sept. 12 and 13 in Davidson and Cornelius.  Cornelius Today

CRIME NEWS

  • Over the weekend, two people died and two others were injured in violent shootings in Mecklenburg County—CMPD is investigating the incidents.  WCNC
  • North Carolina and Charlotte leaders condemned the fatal light rail stabbing that took 23-year-old Iryna Zarutska’s life on Aug. 22—authorities reported suspect Decarlos Brown Jr. is set to appear in court on Sept. 19 as officials review transit security measures.  WBTV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A major intersection at Brawley School Road — West Wilson Avenue in the Lake Norman area will close for six months as part of a $51 million road widening project — and the North Carolina Department of Transportation will share more details this week.  WSOCTV.com
  • County leaders Mark Jerrell and Mike Bryant will convene community partners tomorrow at Charlotte Mecklenburg Government Center Rm 267 from 9—11 a.m. to discuss OBBBA, which will change SNAP and Medicare benefits in 2026 and 2027 and form a working group for advocacy.  Mecklenburg County News
