- ➤ Patrick McHenry, a senior at Hough High School (completing his Eagle Scout project with Troop 97), earned his Eagle Scout rank by building play boxes at Rosedale Nature Park and North Mecklenburg Park last month. He filled the boxes with toys (worth more than $120) to encourage play but has spent hundreds refilling them when items were not returned. Lake Norman Publications
- ➤ Pottstown, a historic Black community in Huntersville, is fighting to preserve its legacy as rapid development threatens to push residents out + local advocates call for measures to protect its history. WCNC
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ The Lake Norman Chamber Expo will take place Tuesday, Oct. 14 at the Huntersville Recreation Center. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.—free admission and on-site parking available—and will host over 120 local businesses and nonprofits for the largest regional trade show. Cornelius Today
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Residents can apply for a seat on the proposed Metropolitan Public Transportation Authority board until Monday, Oct. 13 if the 1% sales tax referendum passes on November’s ballot — the online application for the Cornelius seat is closed. Seats for Cornelius, Davidson, Huntersville, Matthews, Mint Hill and Pineville will be filled by local government bodies, with Mecklenburg County given six seats and three positions appointed by state officials. - ➤ The North Carolina State Health Department reported its first flu death when a man from western North Carolina died last week from complications—state leaders urged people to get vaccinated and COVID vaccines will be available without a prescription starting Monday. WSOCTV.com

- ➤ Leslie Hamilton, a Charlotte native, completed the first documented solo 26-mile swim across Lake Norman last weekend in about 14 hours and 49 minutes—her swim is pending ratification by the Marathon Swimmers Federation. WCNC
