If you're a Charlotte-area worker or small-business owner eyeing construction jobs, the city is offering training. The city's program teaches small-business owners and their employees how to win large construction contracts, with free courses from several city departments. It's tied to the 1% sales tax Mecklenburg County voters passed in 2025 for roads, rail and buses.

  • City investment: more than $2 million in programs
  • Current class: 19 people in a four-week boot camp
  • Expected in the next six months: $30 million in projects
  • Large projects identified: seven, with completion dates of 2030

The training reaches workers too. In the current class, participants learn CPR, first aid and job-site safety before hands-on construction. The city is preparing for more than $25 billion in transportation and transit investment over 30 years, which it estimates could create roughly 6,000 jobs.
