North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein signed a law called the Projects for Advancing Vehicle‑Infrastructure Enhancements Act that lets Mecklenburg County hold a 1-cent sales tax referendum in November to fund new transit and road improvements—Huntersville is set to get $11 million in its first year for intersection upgrades, street lighting and sidewalks. The tax is expected to support bus service enhancements, rail projects including the long-awaited Red Line commuter rail, and other vital roadway safety measures.
Governor Stein signed Senate Bill 391 on July 1, 2025, authorizing cities and counties to install speed cameras in school zones beginning October 1—drivers caught speeding will incur a $250 fine without license points.
Cameras will be in areas with warning signs posted 1,000 feet ahead, and drivers have 30 days to pay or appeal tickets.
