Panthers reshuffle the defense and Charlotte's watering limits end

Plus, Charlotte Water ends mandatory watering limits and a free course targets the transit-tax building boom.

The Panthers fired defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero and are retooling the defense before Denver

The Panthers' defense ranks near the bottom of the NFL

27.6
points allowed per game, 28th in the NFL
140.7
rushing yards allowed per game, 30th
45.8%
third-down rate allowed, 27th

If you follow the Panthers, the defense has a new voice this week. Carolina fired defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero after a primetime loss to Green Bay. The Panthers fell 27-19 on Thursday night. Defensive line coach Todd Wash is now the interim coordinator and will call the defense's plays. He ran Jacksonville's defense from 2016 to 2020, and the team also parted ways with passing game coordinator Jonathan Cooley.

Players aren't saying much about scheme. Nick Scott said general manager Dan Morgan gave him a call with the news, and Coach Dave Canales said "we're built to be a 3-4 team."

  • Run game: AC Carter also coaches the defensive line
  • Secondary: Renaldo Hill still oversees the defensive backs
  • Record: 3-4 after the Green Bay loss
  • Evero's four seasons: 29th, 32nd, 15th, 27th in points allowed

Carolina had 10 days between the Green Bay loss and its next game, and the banged-up Panthers will hope to get some players back before they host Denver.

The Panthers' staff changes run from Friday to a Nov. 8 home game against Denver

  1. Oct. 30Panthers fire Evero and Cooley and name Wash interim coordinator.
  2. Nov. 2Panthers hire DeAngelo Hall as cornerbacks coach.
  3. Nov. 3Panthers move on from assistant linebackers coach Mayur Chaudhari.
  4. Nov. 8Panthers will host the Denver Broncos in Charlotte.

Business

Charlotte is launching a free course to prepare small businesses for transit-tax construction jobs

If you own a small business and want a piece of the region's next building boom, Charlotte has a free course coming. The city is launching Skilled to Build to teach companies how to compete for big contracts, and the first cohort starts in 2027. Applications for that group open early next year, and owners who want training sooner can sign up through an online form from .

$19.4 billionestimated over several decades from the 1% sales tax

Mecklenburg County voters approved the 1% sales tax last year to support road and transit work. It took effect July 1.

  • Format: six courses, all taught in person
  • Each course: a two-hour core session plus a one-hour bonus session
  • Focus: business skills like capital and legal hurdles, not trade skills
  • Course designer: Growmetix, hired by the city

Why now? A city report found demand will exceed local labor capacity by 2030. If market conditions persist, local businesses could build only about half of the projects when demand peaks around 2040. Program manager Alban Burney said, "When small businesses are successful, Charlotte's economy is successful."

Charlotte expects construction demand to outrun local labor by 2030

Can someone please explain why they are allowing animals to be hunted on a nature preserve???

“It’s not bad enough that we build build build & run them out of their natural habitats, but now we’re allowing hunts on the one place they should be safe. This is inhumane, disgusting behavior & we the people need to put a stop to it.”
