If you follow high school football, start with Hough. The Huskies, the wire-to-wire No. 1 in The Charlotte Post's rankings, earned a first-round bye after a 49-0 win over Hopewell. The 8A playoffs start Friday, and seven Mecklenburg County programs are in the 10-team West region bracket.

  • Byes: four teams, including Hough, Mallard Creek and Chambers
  • Palisades hosts Ardrey Kell, a rematch of a 21-14 Palisades win
  • West Charlotte hosts Hoke County in the first round

Mallard Creek got its bye by beating Chambers on Oct. 30 for the title. HighSchoolOT reports the Mavericks held Chambers to 117 yards of total offense and won their 12th league title. "It's very possible we could see them again," coach Kennedy Tinsley said.
