Charlotte City Council votes Monday on a 10.5-year airport lease with a $2.1 billion capital program

The lease comes with big numbers

$2.1 billion
capital investment program
10.5 years
length of the lease
$3 billion
projected airline rent
55%
city's cut of annual revenue sharing

If you fly out of Charlotte Douglas, Monday matters. Charlotte City Council is set to vote on the new lease, and the airport says airline money would pave the way for the Concourse C expansion, a new passenger tunnel and renovations to international arrivals.

  • Vote: Monday, Nov. 9, Charlotte City Council
  • Takes effect: Jan. 1, if approved
  • Program name:
  • Size: more than four times the previous agreement's program

Not everyone is cheering. At an Oct. 27 town hall, airport workers and the union urged the council to delay, citing low wages and American Airlines' near-total control of the gates. The drafted lease doesn't address workers' rights, and state law bars cities from regulating wages and benefits.

Sen. Thom Tillis told a podcast he would "move heaven and Earth to create that airport authority" if local government "challenges or threatens the independence of that airport."

Panthers hand the defense to Todd Wash before Sunday's game against the Broncos

If you're watching the Panthers on Sunday, expect a new look on defense. Carolina (3-4) fired defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero on Fri., Oct. 30, a day after a 27-19 loss at Green Bay, and the team had allowed 70 points in two weeks.

Carolina gave up 27 to the Packers, and Dave Canales then replaced his defensive coordinator.

  • Also let go: defensive passing game coordinator Jonathan Cooley
  • Run defense: ranked 30th in the league
  • Kickoff: Sunday, 1 p.m., Panthers host the Broncos (6-2)

Canales gave Wash one order after the promotion: "Stop the run." Wash was Jacksonville's defensive coordinator for five seasons, and the defense is embracing his energy, WRAL reported.

The work lets build a safety barrier wall and add pavement markings. Traffic will then shift from the median to the outside lanes while crews begin building interior bridge bents, WHKY reported. Officials didn't say how long the closures will last, and the Mooresville Tribune also flagged the Monday start. Charlotte ObserverWHKYMooresville Tribune

The Wrap

Downtown Mooresville has a coffee shop with a museum inside. Richard's Coffee Shop and Welcome Home Veterans Museum has been a downtown staple since 2009, filled with artifacts, photos, medals and clippings from most of the wars our troops fought. The Mooresville-Lake Norman Rotary just helped pay for a new audio/visual system there. Pour a cup, take a walk through history.
